Bucharest Photofest

Bucharest Photofest returns for its 11th edition under the theme WITNESS, an investigation into what it means to be truly present in front of a subject and into what makes an image matter in a moment of unprecedented visual saturation.

From Pulitzer, World Press Photo, National Geographic and Ian Parry grant winners, to a vibrant local scene, this edition brings together practices tested at the highest level of international photography and artists building something of their own here, at home.

For eleven years, the festival has affirmed photography as more than an aesthetic act: a tool of knowledge, a way of questioning reality, and a vehicle for civic engagement. To bear witness is not a passive gesture that impassively crosses the surface of events; it requires a real presence. At its fullest, photography is precisely a practice of that presence, one that can turn the gaze into a form of knowledge, and knowledge into an ethical obligation.
